Weekend Roundup: Fiddle Favorites

Mobile web newsWell, we’re still here. Wait…was that a rumble? Maybe…no, just my stomach. Okay then, since we are apparently going to make it through this thing (though the day is still young) I suppose we should go ahead and get back to business as usual. While we may be a little let down about this whole non-pocalypse, the good news is this week just so happened to be a pretty eventful one in the world of mobile web news. So, if you can stand to peel your eyes away from the sky for just a few minutes, why not check out some of our favorite stories from this week in mobile. Read More…

Weekend Roundup: Fiddle Favorites

Now that Turkey day is behind us, and hopefully we’ve all made it through Black Friday and Cyber Monday and Decompression Tuesday-through-Friday, how about we cap off the week with some good old fashioned fun in the form of looking back at our favorite stories, headlines, and developments from the week that was?

• It’s an exciting change we’re beginning to see as more and more major publications are featuring mobile in a familiar light versus the “fear of the unknown”. That said, when really smart people have really insightful ideas about the unfamiliarity of mobile, we’re more than happy to give them a read and this week that was the case with Joline McGoldrick, research director at Dynamic Logic, and her article, “Mobile: An Effective — Yet Unloved — Marketing Medium”.

• Ready for our RIM face palm of the week? In anticipation of the Blackberry 10 release, you may have seen the stock charts look strangely positive for the first time in years for RIM. Well, that optimism seems to have faded fast as just as suddenly as the ticker rose, RIM’s share price has begun to tank yet again.

• The folks over at Buzzfeed are amongst the many that have put mobile as a first priority for some time now. This week, Buzzfeed president Jon Steinberg wrote a fantastic piece for Ad Age, talking about the need to change our perception of a “mobile strategy”.

• Facebook, despite all its critics, is actually making plenty of strides in the mobile space. Today, Opera released its monthly State of the Mobile Web Report, and it turns out Facebook is still stomping the competition.

• We usually refrain from including links to our own articles on these roundups, but this week we made a major shift in our business model and are changing the way we think about mobile. Check out our new direction, and let us know what you think.

Okay folks that’s all for this week. I’ll go ahead and toss a spoiler your way to chew on for the weekend, be on the lookout for a complete makeover to our website early next week. We’re introducing a whole new look and feel along with some really cool new functionality that we think is going to be a truly unique experience. Have a good weekend everyone and make sure to keep checking in with FiddleFly for more news and updates.

Weekend Roundup: Fiddle Favorites

It’s that time again folks, the end of the week is here. And for one of the world’s most powerful companies, this week couldn’t end soon enough. If you haven’t heard about the 48 hours of hell that were Google’s last 2 days, they’ve had a rough stretch to say the least. After an accidental release of the company’s third quarter earnings report that contained some very disappointing numbers, Google’s stick took a massive hit. Then, just to kick the company when it was down (relatively speaking), YouTube completely went down just minutes before Google was scheduled to begin live streaming its earnings call. While all this chaos was going on at Google, you may have missed some of the other major stories that were floating around the mobile web world this week, but luckily we’re here to round up some of our favorites: Read More…

Weekend Roundup: Fiddle Favorites

Friday is here again folks and whether you have been sweating your favorite baseball team’s plight, watching Eddie Munster go up against Jack Nicholson in the VP debate (and by the way, a lot of people think Biden was laughing because of Ryan’s inexperience, but it turns out it was because they just kept playing that Samsung GS3 commercial on the monitor behind the audience), or among the many just trying not to get tangled up in all the hype, hopefully you’ve found a few minutes to try and keep up with the happenings in mobile web news this week. Well for those of you who haven’t quite been able to peel yourself away, we’re here to catch you up quick, and for those that have, here are a few things that may have slipped through the cracks. Weekend Roundup: Fiddle Favorites

I suppose we can’t do a wrap up of the week without touching on that whole presidential debate thing that happened right? Well while President Obama was sleepily scowling, Governor Romney was eerily smirking and tossing shaky statistics around like a beach ball, Jim Lehrer was raising his hand in the back of class getting ignored and the American public was scrambling to determine if they actually learned anything, we were busy collecting some of the most interesting headlines and stories from this week in mobile web. Care to take a look? Well alright then:

• The restaurant industry was among the earliest adopters of mobile web technology, and has continued to be among the top outlets that mobile users access. This week, those numbers got even more striking, as a study from Nielson and Telemetrics revealed that 95% of smartphone users have searched for a local restaurant on their phone, and a shocking 64% of those searches result in action within one hour.
